Mindfulness Lessons to Practice at Home

Mad to Glad was written for children between the ages of 3-7. The book includes mindfulness lessons to help children cope with changing emotions. It teaches children the following mindfulness lessons:
Mad to Glad Characters

  • Energy Transfer: Using physical movement to change negative thoughts to a positive attitude of the mind 
  • Visualizations: Using a child's imagination to achieve goals 
  • Affirmations: Using positive phrases to build a child's confidence 
  • Focused Breathing: Using the breath to become aware of the present moment


Practice these lessons with children at both happy and sad moments. With daily practice, children will remember how to implement their inner mindfulness.

How to get your child excited about chilling out...

When reading Mad to Glad aloud, encourage children to act out the instructions associated to each emotion. Read the stories often, and practice daily.

Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment in a non-judgemental way. This mindful awareness stops our brains from pondering the "I should haves" of yesterday and worrying about the "What ifs?" of tomorrow.

In my experience with teaching Mindfulness to children, I realized emotions, both positive and negative, require awareness. I wrote this short story to help children become aware of common reactions to everyday situations. This book helps children recognize their emotions while they are experiencing the emotion. With guidance and practice, this internal awareness enables the child to create space between the challenging experience that their emotional and physical reaction.

My mission is to help children recognize that anger, frustration, sadness, and loneliness are common emotions, and it is natural to feel them every now and then. This book contains simple exercises inspired by my own Mindfulness practice, to help children increase their coping abilities. your child will learn to transfer their energy from fear and anger into positive thoughts and actions that serve their social and emotional growth.

A lovely review on Bookworm for Kids!

This is a book written to help children learn ways to identify and handle negative emotions in an effective and focused manner.
Five negative emotions are explored and with each one, a different possibility to handle the emotion is explained. First the emotion is named. Then, an example of how this emotion might arise is shown through a situation kids ages 3 to 6 have probably experienced themselves. After this, an easy action which the reader can imitate is given. And to round off the emotion/action, the reader is asked to repeat a simple phrase which will lock into their minds. At the end, there is a Mindful Diary, but I didn't find an explanation of what to do with it.
This is a calming book with good advice parents, teachers or other leading figures can use to help kids deal with their emotions. The advice is sounds, and if nothing else, readers will enjoy imitating the methods. A nice plus is the diversity of characters in the illustrations.
The illustrations are nicely done and go well with the text. Through them, it's easy for young readers/listeners to understand exactly what is meant in the text.
The writing itself is informative and easy for kids to understand. A few things didn't flow as well as they might have, but that doesn't interfere with the main purpose of the book.
Summed up: this is a lovely book for parents, teachers or others to share with kids, who might benefit from a way to deal with more difficult emotions.

"Mad to Glad: Mindfulness Lessons to Help Children Cope with Changing Emotions" was written in part to help children become aware of emotions while they are experiencing them. This heightened awareness then builds a foundation making it possible for the child to establish insulating space between the "challenging experience and their emotional and physical reaction."
It is natural for children and all to experience many emotions, such as frustration, sadness, anger, etc. Mindfulness practice can help children develop their abilities to cope with these emotions and move the energy into positive growth experiences.
"Mad to Glad" presents five different experiences of emotions from a child's viewpoint, exploring experiences of mad, sad, frustrated, fear, and lonely relating to a child's specific situation. In each instance, the feeling is described and presented in the present. Then a suggested calming or centering response is demonstrated, such as breathing in deeply through the nose and then releasing air through the mouth, with eyes open and then closed. Deep breathing can accompany healing thoughts such as imagining you are blowing all the lonely feelings away. After the mindfulness exercise, the child is able to move through the experience in a positive way and go on growing. Each exercise ends with the instruction to repeat aloud, "I am Happy again. I am Good always." A portrait of the child's smiling face accompanies this affirmation.
Cheery, inclusive pictures of children of different sexes, ages, and races help to make the mindfulness approach universal. A final page includes a mindfulness diary page, with name and date and blanks to fill in experiences. "Mad to Glad" is an excellent meditation tool for children age 3-7.
